Implications of Social Media Addiction on Academic Performance among Generation Z Student-athletes during COVID-19 Lockdown

With the rapid advancement of internet technology, increasing prevalence smartphone ownership at a young age, uncertainty surrounding end COVID-19 pandemic, and effect social media addiction on academic performance among students, use will continue to be major point contention. However, student-athletes are distinct group students who should not overlooked due their concurrent commitments studying, training, competing. As such, this study sought investigate Generation Z during Malaysia's lockdown. The research design used in was quantitative cross-sectional survey. This surveyed 91 respondents utilized Social Media Addiction Questionnaire (SMAQ) Grade Point Average (GPA). findings indicated that Facebook preferred platform over Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, more than half participants were addicts. researchers concluded had significant impact performance, accounting for 57.6 percent variance. These imply excessive use, leading addiction, has negative performance. Solutions desperately needed, such as turning off notifications, silencing phone, engaging home workouts, reconnecting with family, or taking up new hobbies.
